 Weather Alert – Dolomites 08.07.2025

It has been snowing over some parts of the Dolomites in recent days, with temperatures plummeting well below seasonal averages, especially at higher altitudes.

  •  Before traveling, please check the current weather conditions for your destination.

  •  Bring appropriate clothing and equipment for cold and potentially snowy conditions.

  •  Be prepared for sudden changes in weather and limited visibility.

Stay safe and plan accordingly!

The Dolomites are not about visiting the towns and their attractions; they are about experiencing the natural beauty that surrounds them. Whether you’re hiking in the mountains, cycling along scenic trails, or simply soaking in the fresh alpine air, staying outside is an essential part of the Dolomites experience. But if you're traveling with kids, finding a family-friendly town in the Dolomites with all the necessary amenities is key to ensuring a smooth and enjoyable stay.

The choice of town will depend on various factors such as your budget, preferred activities, proximity to specific hiking or skiing areas, and whether you’ll have a car. Some towns are more luxurious and expensive, while others offer more budget-friendly options. With so many great towns to choose from, it’s essential to pick the one that fits your family’s needs best.

Having spent several years exploring the Dolomites, we’ve stayed in a number of towns and are happy to share some of our favorite family-friendly spots. Here’s a guide to some of the best towns in the Dolomites that you might want to consider for your next family vacation in Italy.

Ortisei with Kids: Top Activities & Attractions

Ortisei with Kids

Ortisei, located in the Val Gardena, is one of the most popular and picturesque towns in the Dolomites.

Ever wondered why Ortisei is on the list of must-visit towns in the Dolomites? Let us show you what makes it so special!

Accessibility by Public Transport
Ortisei is incredibly well-connected by public transport. The town is easy to reach from major cities like Bolzano and Bressanone, making it convenient for visitors traveling without a car.

Wide Range of Accommodation

Ortisei offers a variety of accommodations, from cozy hotels and guesthouses to luxurious resorts and family-friendly apartments.

Cable Cars Within Walking Distance

One of Ortisei’s unique features is the proximity of its cable cars. Many of the town’s ski lifts, including the Seceda and Alpe di Siusi cable cars, are just a short walk away, offering quick and easy access to the slopes and hiking trails, even for families with small children.

Mar Dolomit Swimming Pool

After a day of outdoor adventure, you can unwind at the Mar Dolomit Swimming Pool, which is open both in winter and summer. This wellness center features both indoor and outdoor pools, making it the perfect spot for relaxation.

Kids’ Snow and Adventure Parks

Ortisei is a family-friendly destination, and its kids’ snow and adventure parks are a huge draw. I highly recommend checking out the local playgrounds—they're right in the town center, super convenient, and best of all, there's no need for a cable car ticket to get there.

Some of the playgrounds and adventure parks in Ortisei that are perfect for families include:

  1. Parco Giochi Ortisei - Str. Sotria, 60, 39046 Ortisei BZ, Italy
Located in the heart of town, this charming playground is ideal for younger children. It features swings, slides, climbing structures, and plenty of space to run around. Plus, it’s just a short stroll from cafés and shops—perfect for a relaxing break while the kids play.

  2. Adventure Park & Fly Line " Emozion Col de Flam"
Just a few minutes from the center of Ortisei, this adventure park is packed with fun for all ages.

  3. If you're visiting Ortisei in winter, don't miss the chance to try one of the longest sledge runs in Italy – Rasciesa, stretching for an impressive 4.9 kilometers. To reach it, head to the Rasciesa funicular station in Ortisei. You can rent a sledge right next to the ticket office before boarding the funicular (note: it's a train, not a cable car). The ride includes a middle stop – don’t get off there! That’s actually where you’ll return after sledging down from the top. Once you're at the summit, enjoy the exhilarating descent and then decide whether to head back up for another round or call it a day and return to the base. Depending on snow conditions, we  highly recommend bringing protective glasses – the ride can get fast, and snow and ice often splash up into your face. After just three runs, we were already worn out, so in our opinion, a full-day ticket isn’t really necessary. If you already have a Dolomiti Superski Pass or Val Gardena Pass, you can use it for the Rasciesa funicular as well.

Rich Culture and History

Ortisei is home to a rich cultural heritage, which is visible in its charming architecture and historic landmarks. The town is known for its wood-carving traditions, and you can visit local shops and museums to learn about its craftsmanship and history.

Having considered all that this town has to offer, it’s not difficult to imagine that Ortisei is also one of the most expensive towns in the area.

However, if you’re renting a car and don’t mind a short drive, there are more budget-friendly options just 15 minutes away. Nearby villages still offer incredible views and access to the same trails and ski lifts — but without the premium cost.

Ortisei is absolutely worth visiting, but with a little planning, you can experience its magic without blowing your entire travel budget.

Selva di Val Gardena with Kids: Top things to do

Selva di Val Gardena with Kids

Located just a short drive from Ortisei, Selva di Val Gardena is another great family-friendly town in the Dolomites. Known for its ski slopes, Selva is a fantastic choice for families visiting during the winter months. However, in the summer, it transforms into a hub for hiking and outdoor activities.

The town is a little more laid-back compared to Ortisei, but it still offers plenty of family-oriented services. The Selva area is well connected with lifts and cable cars, providing easy access to hiking trails that are suitable for all skill levels. The town itself is quiet, making it ideal for those looking for a peaceful environment, but it’s close enough to major attractions in the Dolomites for families who want a bit more activity. Here is a list of our favourite things to do while on holiday  in Selva di Val Gardena:

In the heart of Selva di Val Gardena, you'll find a small but well-equipped playground (Parco Giochi Municipio) that’s perfect for little adventurers. This playground is a great spot for kids to burn off some energy while parents relax and enjoy the views. It's a hidden gem that offers fun for the family in the middle of this picturesque village!

Other great playgrounds around Selva di Val Gardena include:

  1. Parco Giochi Sportstadion Pranives
Located next to the Pranives Sports Stadium, this playground offers a fun space for kids to let off some steam.

  2. Parco Giochi Plan da Tieja
Set in the quieter Plan da Tieja area, this playground is surrounded by beautiful mountain views and peaceful green spaces. It’s a lovely place to unwind while the kids enjoy the slides, swings, and climbing structures.

02

Uncover the Fun at Dolomites Adventure Parks

For a bit more adventure, the Movimënt Adventure Parks are a must.

These mountain-top parks are easily accessible from nearby La Villa and San Cassiano and packed with interactive outdoor games, climbing structures, and fitness trails.

Though not right in Selva di Val Gardena, they’re well worth the short trip if you're exploring the area—they offer incredible views and a unique high-altitude playground experience.

Nestled in the heart of Selva’s town center, the Singing Clock on the façade of the Sarteur House is a delightful attraction for all ages. Every day at 11:00 AM and 6:00 PM (or 5:00 PM in winter), it comes to life with melodic chimes and whimsical figurines that enchant both children and adults alike.

It has a rich history, and its medieval center is filled with charming streets, churches, and museums that are perfect for a relaxed afternoon stroll. While Bressanone isn’t nestled right in the heart of the Dolomites, it’s a great base for those who want to explore the region while enjoying a bit of city life.
