As a family that has explored the Dolomites extensively, we were genuinely surprised by how family-friendly San Martino di Castrozza is. Nestled in a stunning alpine valley surrounded by the Pale di San Martino peaks, the town offers a perfect mix of breathtaking scenery, outdoor adventure, and activities for kids. What amazed us most was that, despite its beauty, it still felt welcoming and approachable for families, even during peak seasons.

Top Activities for Families in San Martino di Castrozza

San Martino di Castrozza Prà Nassa: Family Fun in Winter and Summer

One of our favorite stops in San Martino di Castrozza is Prà Nassa, a dedicated family and beginner ski area located just a short, easy walk from the town center. In winter, Prà Nassa is a true snow paradise for little ones and first-time skiers, featuring gentle slopes, a magic carpet lift, sledding areas, and even tubing zones. It’s designed specifically for children to learn and play safely, while parents can relax and watch their kids take their first ski steps or enjoy a ride on the sledding runs — the perfect mix of adventure and comfort.

In summer, Prà Nassa transforms into a lush alpine playground, offering swings, climbing structures, picnic spots, and open green spaces where children can run and explore. With panoramic views of the Pale di San Martino peaks and thoughtful kid-friendly facilities, Prà Nassa is a must-visit destination for families no matter the season.

Alpe Tognola: Ski Paradise and Kids’ Clubs

Alpe Tognola: Ski Paradise and Kids’ Clubs

For winter families, Alpe Tognola is a dream. Its gentle slopes are ideal for beginners and intermediate skiers, while more advanced family members can take a short drive to Passo Rolle for steeper terrain. What we appreciated most was the kids’ club, where children could play under the care of animators while we enjoyed uninterrupted skiing. Some hotels even participate in the Dolomiti Family Fun program, offering morning ski school, shuttle transport directly to the slopes, and afternoon supervised activities — giving parents a chance to hike or relax. It’s hands-down one of the most convenient family skiing setups we’ve experienced in the Dolomites.

Explore Park Paneveggio and the Deer Forest

Just a short drive from town lies the Paneveggio-Pale di San Martino Natural Park, home to majestic red spruce forests and a thriving deer population. Walking here with kids is magical — you can watch deer, learn about local wildlife, and explore trails that are both educational and relaxing. The park is a perfect escape from skiing or hiking, offering families a chance to connect with nature at a slower pace.

Family-Friendly Hikes in San Martino di Castrozza

Hiking to Malga Venegiota with Kids: Scenic Trails in the Dolomites

One of the most rewarding family hikes in San Martino di Castrozza leads through the lush Val Venegia to Malga Venegiota, a panoramic alpine hut nestled beneath towering Dolomite peaks. The hike begins at Pian dei Casoni near Passo Rolle and winds through open alpine meadows and along a gentle stream, making it suitable for kids — and even for sturdy strollers. Depending on your pace and the number of breaks you take, the hike typically takes 45 minutes to 1.5 hours each way. Along the route, you’ll pass Malga Venegia, a scenic spot perfect for a snack or picnic lunch. In winter, you can bring a sledge and enjoy a fun ride back to the parking area — a playful incentive that keeps kids motivated on the uphill walk and makes the hike enjoyable for the whole family.

Baita Segantini with kids - a family hike

Hiking to Baita Segantini with kids: One of the Most Iconic Stops in the Dolomites

For families seeking a bit more adventure in the Dolomites, the hike to Baita Segantini is one of the area’s most iconic outings. The fastest route starts from Passo Rolle, following a scenic track that passes Rifugio Capanna Cervino and gently climbs to the classic alpine hut in about 40–50 minutes — ideal for families who want breathtaking Dolomite views without committing to a long trek.

Along the way, the trail treats you to panoramic vistas of the Pale di San Martino and opens up to the terrace of Baita Segantini, where a small alpine lake reflects the towering peaks — a perfect spot to pause and take it all in. Since Baita Segantini is closed in winter, we recommend including a stop at Rifugio Capanna Cervino, which remains open year-round. It’s an excellent halfway point to rest, enjoy hot drinks, and recharge before heading back, making the hike enjoyable and manageable for children.

Family Events in the Dolomites 2026

11-13 September 2026 | Canazei

The Gran Festa da d’Istà is a vibrant end-of-summer celebration held in Canazei, bringing together Ladin communities from Val di Fassa and the valleys surrounding the Sella massif. Over three days, visitors can enjoy traditional Ladin cuisine, live folk music, and cultural entertainment in a warm alpine atmosphere.

The highlight of the festival takes place on Sunday at 3:00 p.m., when around a thousand participants — including brass bands and folk groups — parade through the town centre in beautifully preserved traditional costumes. Decorated carriages and colourful floats add to the spectacle, creating a joyful and authentic celebration of Ladin heritage that is especially captivating for families and children.

18-20 September 2026 | Moena, Soraga & Predazzo (Trentino)

A three-day festival dedicated to the renowned Puzzone di Moena PDO cheese, featuring tastings, food tours, show cooking, open-air lunches and family-friendly workshops. Visitors can enjoy guided dairy visits, live demonstrations and culinary events across the Fassa and Fiemme valleys.

The highlight is the traditional Desmontegada cattle parade — Saturday 19 September in Soraga and Sunday 20 September in Moena — when festively decorated cows and other livestock return from the alpine pastures, accompanied by folk music and local groups.
