Lake Garda isn’t just Italy’s largest lake — it’s a paradise for families seeking crystal-clear waters, pebbly beaches, and safe swimming spots. As a family living in Bergamo, we take advantage of the short drive and visit the lake often, exploring different areas almost every season. Over the years, we’ve learned which beaches are perfect for little swimmers, which spots are ideal for relaxing picnics, and which areas are better left for sightseeing rather than swimming.

In addition to our tried-and-tested recommendations on where to swim in Lake Garda with kids, you may also find our family guide to visiting Lake Garda helpful, where we cover the top things to do, the most family-friendly towns, and the best time to visit.

Manerba del Garda Beaches

Manerba del Garda – Pisenze and La Romantica Beaches

Manerba del Garda is barely known among international tourists, yet it has some of the most charming and family-friendly beaches on the lake. This is exactly why we keep coming back — it feels calmer, more local, and much more relaxed compared to the busy hotspots.

  • Pisenze Beach: A beautiful pebble beach with calm, shallow waters that are perfect for kids. Our daughter could safely paddle and swim while we relaxed nearby.

  • La Romantica Beach: Beyond its shoreline, this beach has a unique tree library, where children can pick up books and enjoy a quiet, magical reading spot.

Tips for families:

  • Arrive early during summer to find parking.

  • Bring water shoes to navigate the pebbly shore comfortably.

  • Both beaches have bars nearby for snacks and drinks.

Our experience: Initially, we weren’t sure if our child could safely enjoy pebble beaches. After visiting Pisenze and La Romantica, we found them calm, safe, and ideal for a whole day of fun.

Island of San Biagio – The Rabbits Island Adventure

Just 200 meters off the coast of Manerba del Garda lies the Island of San Biagio, affectionately called the “Rabbits Island.”

  • Access: Reachable by boat from Port Torchio, or on foot from Camping San Biagio when the water is low.

  • Facilities: Sunbeds, small picnic spots, and a summer bar serving drinks and snacks.

  • Tips: Bring water shoes for the rocky shoreline. Entrance requires a fee unless you’re a guest at Camping San Biagio.

Why kids love it: The excitement of visiting an actual island make it a memorable adventure for children.

Lazise – Popular, But Not Ideal for Family Swimming

Lazise Beach
Lazise Beach, Lake Garda

Lazise is one of the most popular spots on Lake Garda, especially among tourists, with countless campsites and holiday villages surrounding the area. On the surface, it seems like a perfect choice for families — but our experience told a different story.

What many families don’t realise is that the water quality and overall swimming experience here can be disappointing, particularly during the busy summer months. When we visited in July and August, the beaches were crowded, the water didn’t feel as clean, and the atmosphere lacked the calm, relaxed feel we look for when swimming with kids.

The biggest contrast? Just a short drive away, you’ll find hidden beaches around Lake Garda with crystal-clear water, fewer crowds, and stunning mountain backdrops — everything Lazise promises, but doesn’t quite deliver in peak season.

Our experience: Despite its popularity, Lazise was one of the few places where we didn’t feel comfortable letting our child fully enjoy the water. It simply didn’t offer the same safe and enjoyable swimming conditions as other areas around the lake.

Tip for families: Visit Lazise for its charming old town, lakeside restaurants, and evening strolls — but for swimming with kids, choose quieter and cleaner spots elsewhere on Lake Garda.

Riva del Garda – Safe Beaches and Playgrounds

Riva del Garda Beach

Riva del Garda offers some of the most family-friendly swimming options.

  • Spiaggia Sabbioni: A pebbly beach with shallow waters for safe swimming. Nearby grassy areas are perfect for picnics.

  • Parco Giochi Playground: Located at Viale Liberazione 3, the playground is close to the beach and main attractions, letting children run, climb, and play safely.

Pro tip: Combine a morning swim with a stop at the playground — it keeps kids happy and parents relaxed.

Final Thoughts – Making the Most of Lake Garda with Kids

Things to do in Riva del Garda with kids

Lake Garda offers a wide variety of family-friendly swimming spots, from Manerba’s pebble beaches to San Biagio Island and Riva del Garda. By exploring lesser-known coves and lagoons, you can avoid crowds, enjoy clean waters, and create unforgettable memories.

With careful planning, simple gear like water shoes and snacks, and choosing the right beaches, a day at Lake Garda becomes an adventure that both kids and parents will remember for years.
