If you're planning to explore Bergamo with kids, I highly recommend starting in Città Alta – the old town of Bergamo. This UNESCO World Heritage site is absolutely stunning and is definitely the heart of the city. The main street is lined with beautiful historic architecture, vibrant shops, and cozy cafes where you can taste traditional Italian dishes. It’s the perfect place to take a leisurely stroll and experience the charm of Italy.

That said, a heads-up for families with prams: Città Alta is a medieval area, and the cobblestone streets can be a bit tricky to navigate with a pushchair. It might not be the most comfortable, but honestly, don’t let that put you off. The beauty and history you'll experience here are well worth it, and it’s a must-see for anyone visiting Bergamo. So grab a baby carrier if you have one, or just take it slow – it’s totally worth it!

Top Things to Do in Città Alta (Bergamo) with kids

01

Explore Piazza Vecchia

Piazza Vecchia is a beautiful square in the center of Città Alta. For centuries, the square has been the lynchpin of Bergamo’s political and civil power and is now a popular meeting place for locals. An influential architect and city planner Le Corbusier considered Piazza Vecchia to be one of the most beautiful squares in Europe.

At the center of Piazza Vecchia is the Contarini Fountain, an iconic symbol of Bergamo and one that all visitors should take time to admire. The sphinx and lions are a reminder of Venice's influence on the city. TIP: bring bubbles and let your kids go crazy catching them around the fountain.

02

Climb the Campanone

As soon as you enter Piazza Vecchia, you can’t miss the Civic Tower, also known as the Campanone.  Its height is 52.76 metres and I highly recommend to climb up (there is a lift).

The cobblestone streets of Città Alta, the Contarini Fountain, rooftops of Piazza Vecchia, and the surrounding area can all be seen from the tower. The views from the top are sure to take your breath away and give you a renewed appreciation for the beauty of the city.

Admission is free for under 10, 1€ for 11-17, 5€ for 18-26, and the full price is 7€, which also includes entry to Palazzo del Podestà. While it offers a compact display of the city's rich history and architecture, what makes it especially appealing for families is the interactive section designed for children. Kids can engage with hands-on exhibits and digital installations that bring Bergamo’s medieval past to life, making the visit both educational and fun. It’s a great little stop to add variety to your sightseeing itinerary.

Discover Piazza Duomo and Marvel at the Colleoni Chapel's Beauty

Piazza Duomo is separated from Piazza Vecchia by Palazzo della Ragione. The Palazzo della Ragione is the heart of Bergamo's civic life and a symbol of its rich culture. Built in the 12th century, it has served as a town hall, courthouse, and even a theatre. Take time to explore Piazza Duomo, where you will find other historical monuments such as the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, the Colleoni Chapel and Bergamo Cathedral (Sant'Alessandro).

Visit Civic Museum of Natural Science

If you're looking for a fun and educational activity to do with your kids in Bergamo, be sure to visit the Civic Museum of Natural Science. This interactive museum offers a unique opportunity to explore the wonders of the natural world, from geology to zoology. With hands-on exhibits and engaging displays, it's a fantastic place for families to learn and have fun together while discovering the fascinating history of our planet. Ristorante Pizzeria San Vigilio in Bergamo is a charming spot located just steps from the upper funicular station in Città Alta. Known for its traditional Italian dishes and wood-fired pizzas, it offers a warm atmosphere with panoramic views over the city and surrounding hills. One of the must-try local specialties here is the rabbit with polenta – a comforting, hearty dish typical of Bergamo’s cuisine. It’s a great place to enjoy a relaxed family meal after a day of exploring the old town.

Il Circolino

Il Circolino in Bergamo’s Città Alta is not only loved for its affordable prices and traditional Bergamasque dishes, but also for its unique setting. Here, you can enjoy a relaxed meal surrounded by 17th-century frescoes that were uncovered during restoration work in the early 2000s. Hidden for years under plaster, these artworks add a special charm to this historic and welcoming spot.
